SOCIAL CIRCLE — It’s an actor’s life for more than two dozen Social Circle children at the Social Circle Theater as they prepare to travel to the Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta this week.
The Social Circle Theater will perform a 15-minute selection from “Godspell Jr.” at the festival and the children have been hard at work for weeks, perfecting choreography, learning songs and getting ready to hit the stage.
“We’ve been working our butts off,” said Avery Reagan, 14, who will be attending the festival for the first time. “We’re all fortunate to be able to go. I can’t wait.”
Social Circle will among hundreds of groups attending the festival, hosted by iTheatrics and New York-based Music Theatre International at the Hilton Atlanta, looking to show off their talents and perhaps win some recognition.
“It shows what we can do in Social Circle,” said theater manager Tera Duval. “We’ve put a lot of practice in on this. I think we’ll do well.”
The Social Circle Theater won “Outstanding Production” at the festival last year in the group’s first appearance and Duval said the kids had high hopes this year.
“We didn’t really know it was a competition last year, so we just went to show our performance by our kids,” Duval said. “It was cool when we won.”
The theater troupe, with kids between the ages of 8 and 16 performing, will not only perform its show at the three-day festival starting Friday, but also get an early look at new junior musicals, attend workshops on theater skills and even take in a professional performance of “Hairspray.”
“The kids are so excited,” said Duval. “These kids will get to see the options in the theater world.”
Rachel Wells, 12, went to the festival last year and is eager to return.
“It was a really good learning experience,” Wells said. “We always have a lot of fun. I’m really excited.”
No matter how they do at the festival, however, all the children had great things to say about the Social Circle Theater.
“This is just a loving, caring, hard-working theater,” Reagan said.
Seth Maddox, 14, said he was looking forward to taking the stage and showing off what they had learned.
“I’ve been in the theater all my life,” Maddox said. “It’s a great place to be.”
